Getting married in LA

Note – Due to the Coronavirus, please check with each courthouse to confirm their hours and the operation of their Marriage License Department

PLEASE NOTE: CA state and LA county marriage license requirements often change. The information below is for guidance only.

There are two types of California marriage licenses available:
the Public License and the Confidential License.

The Public License:

The Marriage license can be issued from any county and the marriage ceremony can take place anywhere in the state.

At least one witness is required to be present at the ceremony.

   The marriage becomes public record.

The Public License costs $90.00 for Los Angeles County.

The Public License is valid for 90 days and there is no waiting period.

You do not have to be a resident of California to be married in California.

The Confidential License:

This requires the couple to be living together prior to the marriage. An affidavit must be signed under penalty of perjury for this requirement. Documented proof is not required.

The Marriage Ceremony must take place in the County where the marriage license is issued.

No witnesses are required to be present at the ceremony.

The marriage record is kept confidential from public viewing. Certified copies are only available to the spouses on the marriage record upon satisfactory proof of identity to the County Clerk.

A public marriage license cannot be changed to a confidential marriage license, and a confidential marriage license cannot be changed to a public marriage license after issuance.

The Confidential License costs $85.00 for Los Angeles County.

The Confidential License is valid for 90 days and there is no waiting period.

You do not have to be a resident of California to get a Confidential License to be married in California.

PLEASE NOTE: State and county marriage license requirements often change. The above information is for guidance only.
